Boat Lift and Dock Power Problems We Fix
Water and electricity are an unforgiving combination, and dock equipment lives in the hardest environment in residential electrical work. Our rule for lift and dock problems is simple: there is one safe thing for you to check, and everything past it is our job.
Your boat lift won't go up or down
If the lift won't run in either direction, check whether the breaker feeding the dock has tripped, and reset it once. If the lift still won't move, stop there. Lift circuits, controls, and dock wiring in salt air fail in ways that need proper diagnosis, and that part is ours.
The lift remote isn't working
If the lift has a manual switch, try it. If the lift runs from the switch but not the remote, or runs from neither, leave it alone and call. Control boxes at the dock are not something to open.
Dock outlets or dock lights are dead
Check whether the GFCI on the dock or pedestal has tripped, and press reset once. If it won't hold, that outlet is telling you something is wrong in a wet environment. Leave it off and call us.
The dock GFCI or pedestal breaker keeps tripping
A GFCI at the water that keeps tripping is doing exactly what it's built to do. Don't bypass it, don't keep resetting it, and don't run cords around it. Call us and we'll find the cause.
Shore power isn't working
Check the pedestal's breaker and GFCI once. Past that, shore power problems can sit in the pedestal, the wiring feeding it, or the boat's own connection, and sorting out which is not a do-it-yourself job.

Electric Shock Drowning Is Preventable
Electric shock drowning happens when faulty dock wiring leaks electricity into the water. Swimmers are paralyzed by current they never feel coming. Aging insulation, corroded connections, and docks wired before shock protection was required are the usual causes, and a dock can be leaking electricity while everything on it still works.
The fix is straightforward: ground fault protection and wiring rated for marine environments. If your dock hasn't been inspected in years, or you don't know when it last was, have it checked. Ask about a dock safety check when you call.
Do I need a permit to wire a dock or boat lift in Lee County?
Yes. Dock electrical work requires a permit and inspection in Lee County, and the inspection is your proof the work is safe around water. We handle both; you never deal with the county yourself.
How do I know if my dock wiring is safe?
Warning signs: breakers that trip when the lift runs, outlets that stopped working after a storm, tingling when touching a ladder or rail, or any dock that hasn't been rewired in decades. A dock can leak electricity into the water while everything on it still works. If you're unsure, have it inspected before anyone swims near it.
What does shore power installation involve?
A dedicated circuit from your panel to a marine-rated inlet or pedestal at the dock, with built-in shock protection. We check what your panel can handle first: on homes with a lift, pumps, and dock lighting already running, that check decides whether the panel carries it or needs an upgrade.
Why does dock equipment fail faster than the rest of the house?
Salt air, humidity, and storm exposure work on electrical connections around the clock, and dock equipment lives in all three. Corrosion tends to build inside connections and controls where it can't be seen, which is why dock problems often show up without warning, and why we use marine-rated hardware on every job at the water.
My dock lost power after a storm. Is that something you handle?
Yes. Storm damage is one of the most common reasons we're called out to docks in Southwest Florida. Salt water and wind are hard on dock wiring, and the damage isn't always visible from the walkway. We repair and rewire storm-damaged docks, permitted and inspected.
